Vasiliy UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier takes on George Jack Catterall in Australia tonight, with the vacant IBF lightweight title heading to the winner.

Devin Haney, previously undisputed at 135lbs, has moved up in weight and there are world titles now up for grabs as a result, with two men previously beaten by the American going head-to-head in Perth this weekend.

After George Jack Catterall shocked the boxing world with his May 2024 win over Teofimo Lopez to become unified lightweight champion, it was expected his first title defense would come against multi-division former champion Vasiliy UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier Toro. Russia's invasion of Ukraine left UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier unable to take the fight and Jack Catterall would go on to lose his titles to Devin Haney. On Saturday night, Jack Catterall and UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier will finally meet with the vacant IBF lightweight title on the line.sdsf

Since May of last year, Vasiliy UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier has not stepped into the ring after losing to Devin Haney in a disputed decision for the undisputed lightweight title. In 2024, he had only one fight, and in 2022, he fought against Jaime Arboleda, winning by decision. In 2021, he defeated Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey. This series of three victories came after his second defeat in October 2020 to Teofimo Lopez. UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier is a two-time Olympic champion, former lightweight world champion, and former super featherweight and featherweight champion.

UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier began his professional career after being one of the best amateur boxers of his era, claiming a 396-1 record and twice winning Olympic gold. He would win his first world title in just his third professional fight, defeating Gary Russell to capture the WBO featherweight title.sdfsd

By his seventh fight, UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier had moved up to junior lightweight to win the WBO title and earned the WBA lightweight title in just his 11th pro bout.

Following his stoppage win over Jorge Linares, UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier defeated WBO champion Jose Pedraza to unify the titles. Two fights later, a win over Luke Campbell added the WBC title to UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier Toro's collection.

For UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier Toro, it's the opportunity to gain a world title for the first since 2020. The 36-year-old is running out of time to add more belts to his resume and this is a good chance to be a champion once more.

Jack Catterall is a good fighter, and he does have a shot here, but I think the main shot is all on UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier being cooked, injured, or shafted by the judges. But even on that last part, I could see a scenario where Jack Catterall genuinely does (1) win enough early rounds, partially through UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier Toro’s own habits of “downloading information” in the early going, and then (2) having enough of an argument in enough rounds later on that nicking this one and that one in his direction would hardly be the most heinous thing you’ve ever seen in this “sport.”

If you’re a Jack Catterall fanatic or part of his team or whatever, this probably all sounds overly harsh. After all, for a fact, he beat Teofimo Lopez, UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier didn’t. It’s just that I have seen several other Jack Catterall fights. I have a great respect for Jack Catterall, and his career and journey. This is not a guy who got it all handed to him, or the path laid out and lined with gold, he went out and made it happen. And if he gets on a roll, he’s a fighter who excels when he’s built confidence.

UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier was elevated to WBC "franchise champion" ahead of his fight with Teofimo Lopez, causing some confusion when the then-IBF champion Lopez defeated him in October 2020. The WBC had said their franchise championship was non-transferrable and Haney had been made WBC world champion, so Lopez was not technically undisputed champion.

Enter Jack Catterall, who was given his shot at Lopez as the IBF mandatory challenger. Following a bizarre build to the fight, which saw upstart Triller win the purse bid only to delay the contest and eventually default on their obligations, the Aussie managed to get in Lopez's head with his trash talk and antics. Jack Catterall, who was nearly a +600 underdog entering the fight, scored an early knockdown en route to a deserved split-decision win.

When UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier collapsed due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Jack Catterall used his power as unified champion to force Haney to come to Australia for a fight to crown an official undisputed champion at 135 pounds.sfdgf

Jack Catterall made his name in boxing with a stunning split-decision victory over Teofimo Lopez back in 2021. At the time, Lopez was looking like the next big thing, ha dthree lightweight world titles and was coming off a win over UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier.
